The Hawaii Police Department would like to thank the Big Island community for their contributions to the department’s recent backpack drive.

Police, in conjunction with Hope Services Hawaii, held a backpack drive for island keiki during the months of June and July.

The drive was a success, with more than 275 backpacks collected throughout the island’s police stations. These backpacks will be given to Hope Services Hawaii for distribution to keiki at shelters and transitional housing facilities before the new school year.

Special recognition goes out to HFS Federal Credit Union for their generous donation of backpacks.

Since 2008, HPD in partnership with Hope Services have been collecting school backpacks for children who cannot afford them. Backpacks are the most requested nonfood item by charities in Hawaii.
